Australia's richest man, Kerry Packer, conservationists, and the New South Wales government are at odds over development plans for the Perisher Range resorts in Kosciusko National Park. Packer envisions an apartment development that is much more ambitious than the one proposed by National Parks and Wildlife. Conservation groups and other accommodations operators oppose the plan.

Shortage of skills occurring due to the ageing of the Australian population, which could be compensated with targeted increase in immigration, is discussed. As the ranks of aged childless people swell, demand for purchased unskilled workers in aged-care services will grow.
