Industry consolidation in the 1990s along with favorable operating prospects have made drugstore industry stocks timely for investors in 1999. Margins in the pharmacy sector have also remained stable, although there has been some erosion in recent years, and demographics have been favorable for the industry, as well. Investors need to focus on those stocks which have the best prospects for market share and profit through the years 2001-2003.

Drugstore stocks have not done well in the year 2001 due to consumer caution and store staffing problems. The Medicare drug plans of President George W. Bush has also been postponed. Several of these stocks are timely in 2001 and for the next three to five years, as well.
