'Pillow talk' for productivity: bar coding and EDI help Pillowtex serve its customers better
Article Abstract:
Pillowtex Corp (Dallas, TX), a major manufacturer of pillows, has implemented a bar coding and electronic data interchange (EDI) system for tracking inventory and production in order to support its just-in-time production system. The combination of bar coding and EDI shortens the lead times in the production cycle, increases the accuracy of data collection, and allows the firm to be more responsive to the needs of consumers by increasing its response time. Some suppliers apply bar codes to raw materials shipped to the factory, while materials that have not been encoded are bar coded and scanned to update the firm's inventory records. Orders are received via EDI, and orders are fulfilled and the product encoded with a bar code that can be read at the point of sale. Finished products are packed in boxes that are encoded with bar codes that includes data on the customer, type of product, and quantity.

Reaping the benefits of financial EDI
Article Abstract:
Corporations can use electronic data interchange (EDI) to improve the accuracy, reduce the cost, and increase the timeliness of their financial transactions. EDI allows corporations to work with their trading partners and customers to achieve efficiencies on a great scale. EDI allows the computers of one party to send data to another, thus eliminating the need for the transmission of paper documents. The keys to a company's successful implementation of an EDI system are a commitment to create a relationship with business partners in order to improve the flow of information, the commitment of senior management, the implementation of a pilot program, and the commitment to adhere to technical standards.

Measuring performance in an advanced manufacturing environment
Article Abstract:
The key to survival in manufacturing is to automate intelligently by incorporating new production technologies and performance measurement techniques into a strategic plan. The factors used to measure performance are: people, quality, delivery and cost. The performance measurement system should also monitor market demand and progress made toward meeting business objectives. A study of five manufacturing companies found that 'islands' of technological and accounting changes are beginning to appear. These changes must be proactive rather than reactive in order to be truly successful.
