Pitfalls and Pratfalls of Office Automation
Article Abstract:
Some businesses shy away from automating their offices for a variety of reasons: the trauma of past failures; fear of the unfamiliar; employees' resistance to giving up defined positions. When undertaking such a project, top management must give support by assigning a project manager, communicating with department heads, and monitoring the project team closely. Research and education on systems should be extensive. Charts and tables are helpful in determining the benefits, sometimes intangible, in a cost-benefit analysis. The final choice must be flexible to absorb changes.

What Automation Is Doing to the Office
Article Abstract:
Because statistics used to take so long to compile, businesses were run by guess and rough estimates. Now companies can take orders on-line and produce an inventory count along with price and discounts instantaneously. Distributed personal computers access information in a system or work independently on a special application. Secretaries can use PCs to do word processing, keep schedules or assist with budgets, projections and analyses. Office automation has doubled the production of information in the last decade.
