Karimov resigned on Feb 8, 1996, after Tajikistan Pres Imamali Rakhmanov capitulated to the demands of warlords Makhmud Khudoberdyev and Ibodullo Boimatov that some officials be dismissed. Yakhyo Azimov was appointed the new premier. At the same time, Islamic rebels seized Tavil Dara.
