Bashir claimed victory in elections held from Mar 6-17, 1996. However, opposition leaders, who largely boycotted the elections, urged Bashir to step down. The US expelled a Sudanese diplomat, and called on the UN to place sanctions on Sudan for promoting terrorism.

Egypt blames Iran, Sudan
Article Abstract:
Egyptian Pres Hosni Mubarak during an interview with the 'Financial Times' accused Iran and Sudan of providing support for Islamic terrorists in the Middle East. Mubarak accused Iran of supporting the terrorists that have bombed and attacked tourists in Egypt.

U.S. says Sudan supports terrorism
Article Abstract:
The US added Sudan to the list of countries that support terrorism. Sudan allegedly had links to terrorist groups such as Hezbollah and the Islamic Resistance Movement and may have been involved in a plan to bomb the United Nations. Sudan denied the charges.
