Preval sworn in as Aristide's successor

Preval, who won 88% of the vote in Dec 1995, assumed office on Feb 7, 1996. It was the first peaceful change of power in Haiti since 1804. Aristide, who was barred from seeking a second term, had endorsed Preval. In one of his final acts as president, Aristide restored relations with Cuba.

U.N. takes over Haiti security role from U.S.-led forces

The US transferred peacekeeping operations in Haiti over to the UN in a ceremony on Mar 31, 1995, that was attended by Pres Clinton and UN Sec Gen Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Pres Clinton vowed to back Haiti's fledgling democracy and help the nation rebuild its roads and forests.

Shaky OAS pact sets Aristide's return

Two agreements negotiated at the OAS' headquarters in Feb 1992 were key steps in returning Jean-Bertrand to Haiti as president. Aristide signed agreements with Haiti's parliament and Communist Party leader Rene Theodore.
