Pro-Chechen hijackers surrender ferry

Turks who supported the Chechen rebels in Russia hijacked a ferry in the Black Sea on Jan 16, 1996, and surrendered it on Jan 19, 1996. They said they would blow up the ferry, but when Russian forces captured the village held by Chechens, they surrendered. Many supported the Turks stance.

Main rebel-held Chechen towns fall
Article Abstract:
The Chechen towns of Gudermes and Shali were captured by Russian troops after air and ground forces pummeled them. Fighting by the rebels forces continued in Apr 1995 despite the loss of these former strongholds. Pres Clinton may discuss the fighting when he meets with Pres Yeltsin.
