Tasmania has been lagging behind for decades but the recent interest shown by industry heavyweight, Gunns, to set up pulp and paper mill in the region has brightened the prospects of reviving its economy. Low labor costs, closer accessibility to ports, and land affordability may be the answer to the state's revival.

The outback malaise

Indigenous people of the Northern Territory participate less in the workforce and so their levels of dependence of welfare have increased. Social problems present include overcrowding, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and children skipping class particularly among the 1200 people living in town.
