Malcolm Broomhead became chief executive of Orica, the chemical and explosives company, and quickly stripped $US80 million in costs on September 2001. Orica, reporting a net loss of $193 million, reported a net profit of $214 million a year later, issuing $US185 million of unsecured notes in the United States private placement debt market, with its shares finally closing at $12.48 on October 27, 2003.
