Practicioners who wish to use the Institute of Business Forecasting & Planning's (IBF) data on business forecasting should first examine their company's forecasting processes to better understand the other companies' practices. The five general areas of IBF's benchmarking data are forecast errors, processes, organizational, forecast characteristics and forecast models and packages used.

Increasing forecasting frequency leads to more accurate forecasts, but businesses may not react fast enough and take advantage because of too frequent changes. A cost-benefit analysis will help businesses determine how frequent forecasting should be.
