Redefined 'Fortune' 500 sets '94 profits

Those companies making the 1995 Fortune 500 list showed aggregate profits of $215 billion in 1994, a 54% increase over the previous year. The increase is at least partially attributable to service companies being on the list for the first time. Ford Motor Co led the nation with $5.308 billion in profits.

'92 Fortune 500 profits lowered by charges

One-hundred-and-forty-four of the Fortune 500 corporations took noncash charges to cover retirees' health-benefit costs in 1992, causing aggregate profits to decline. The 1992 profits for the Fortune 500 totaled $10.5 million, and earnings totaled $70.5 billion.
