Regulatory hurdles in an AT&T deal with SBC
Article Abstract:
The merger between AT&T and SBC Communications is being scrutinized by lawyers, lawmakers and lobbyists, all of whom are predicting that the deal will be nearly impossible, if not completely impossible to get government regulators to pass. Nevertheless, AT&T and SBC executives are still proceeding with plans to merge the two companies. Lawyers for AT&T claim they can present a legal case that would make the merger with the regional Bell company a possibility. One point they make is that a merger would encourage and increase competition, because SBC would have to make its market wide open to competition, otherwise the government would not approve the merger. The two companies have yet to even announce a deal, as executives from both companies are still determining the financial terms.

Phone wars heat up over sponsorship of ad
Article Abstract:
The Attorney General of New York is looking into an advertisement placed in the New York Times by the New York Consumers for Economic Competition, claiming that Nynex has the highest local telephone rates in the country. The ad has attracted the attention of the Attorney General because the consumer group is sponsored entirely by AT&T, yet no where on the ad is this mentioned. AT&T is lobbying against Nynex before the New York State Public Service Commission. The ad urges the Public Service Commission to vote against Nynex's proposal to add a number of surcharges to local calls carried by its competitors. Several consumer lobbyists have complained about the ad, claiming that it undermines their own credibility.
