Reith's reform caught in the act
Article Abstract:
Australian unions and courts have used Workplace Minister Peter Reith's bill, the Workplace Relations Act 1996, as a potent tool in resolving workplace relations. The bill was originally intended to encourage companies to deal directly with employees and avoid union arbitration. There have been three main consequences of the act: 1) Reich intends to strengthen anti-strike provisions; 2) employers have been bypassing the Federal Court when seeking injunctions against a union; and 3) Federal Court judges have been increasingly political in their decisions.
