Reno confirmed as first female attorney general

Former Florida state attorney Janet Reno was unanimously confirmed as the first female US attorney general Mar 11, 1993, by the Senate. Reno was sworn in March 12, 1993. Reno's confirmation brought to a close the series of failures by the Clinton administration to name a female attorney general.

The first South African election in which blacks will be allowed to vote is scheduled for Apr 27, 1994. South African Pres Frederik W. de Klerk and African National Congress Pres Nelson Mandela visited the US to gain support for the transition to black majority rule.
