Research and Consultancy: Towards a Conceptual Synthesis
Article Abstract:
Facet analysis is employed to identify and differentiate overlaps of organizational research and consultancy. Over sixty researchers from Great Britain participated in this study. Findings show certain similarities, and their importance to the overall success of a program. Common facets of the two areas are delineated through the use of qualitative data furnished by participants. Special attention is given to management of the links between investigators and subject workers. Research and consultancy are pictured at opposite ends of a continuum, and filled with pure researchers at one end and expert consultants at the other. Twelve facets, or concept compromises, as well as thirty elements are shown in tables. Empirical tests of questionnaire responses showed that middle continuum activities bore more relation to each other than those at either end of the spectrum. Facet analysis shows details of overlaps: high levels of interaction between parties, interpersonal rather than technical requirements, dirth of focus, trust needs, contingency methods humanistic or pragmatic value bases, and limited research and consultant power.
