Australian mining stocks have risen in value due to increased industrial production and investors have responded, but metal price cycles are difficult to forecast despite those production increases. Merrill Lynch and Company Inc. updated its metal price forecasts and noted that gold is the only major commodity still on a downwards trend. However, metal equities pre-empt stronger metal price by around 12 months, and investors may have to wait until 2000 for better earnings.
