Amway says hello to profit growth

Amway of Australia Ltd. is using direct sales and is expanding its use of electronic commerce for further profits. In the year to August 31, 1999, profits increased by 27.6% to $9.7 million. In 1997, catalogue sales comprised up to 45% of Amway's sales; the goal is to reduce that to 30-35%. Amway has developed Internet systems to further its direct sales techniques online.

Red Earth was established in 1991 and sold to Esprit in Jan 1998. During 1998 and 1999 the quality of the product has decreased and management's treatment of franchisees has not been well received. Founders Lynne and Nick Chadwick have started a new cosmetics company which competes with Red Earth.
