Retail sales of PCs in U.S. grew 49% in 4th quarter, boosted by home users
Article Abstract:
US retail PC sales during 4th qtr 1995 indicate an unusually strong 49% increase over 1994 sales. The unexpectedly strong retail growth accounted for a large percentage of the industry's 25% increase in PC unit shipments, particularly since corporate sales decreased. Many industry analysts had been attributing the relatively slow 25% overall increase to poor home sales, but these numbers indicate that home sales continue to be a viable market and, in fact, decreased business sales harmed the market. Fierce competition and cost-cutting measures in the retail market produced small profit margins, which made home PC sales not entirely profitable. Most analysts expect a slowdown in the overall growth in US PC shipments. Corporate sales are expected to remain slow through Jun 1996.

Cheaper PCs start to attract new customers
Article Abstract:
Sub-$1,000 PCs are expanding sales into US households instead of cannibalizing sales, according to a new Dataquest survey. US PC shipments surged 18.5% in the 4th qtr 1997 and 20.9% for 1997, compared to the market researcher's predictions of 17.5% in the quarter and 16% for 1997. The sub-$1,000 PCs played the biggest part in the more than 30% improvement, according to Dataquest researchers. Some PC manufacturers and distributors worried that the less expensive machines would attract only customers who would have purchased $2,000 machines, while PC holdouts would continue to resist the market. PC sales jumped by 13.7% world-wide in the 4th qtr 1997 and 15.8% for 1997, according to Dataquest estimates, which included a 13% drop in Japan and a sharp European recovery.
