Article Abstract:
SBC Communications reported 4th quarter revenue of $14.1 bil. The same 1999 period figure was $12.9 bil. Earnings were $1.95 bil, without certain one-time costs. This was up from $1.85 bil in the comparable year-earlier quarter. Revenue by sector was $2.2 bil for data, $1.85 for wireless, and $10.32 for local, long distance and other services. SBC looks for continued growth in its DSL business, which signed up 251,000 subscribers to total 767,000 by year's end. Other expanding areas are wireless, via its 60% share of Cingular, and long distance, which will add Kansas and Oklahoma to the current Texas service area.

Spectrasite will be the king of towers in 8 of the top 10 markets in the country. SBC is happy to free itself of the capital-intensive business and SpectraSite is happy because towers are their core business and they can sign up competitors who wish to share the towers. The company can now boast of nearly 9,000 towers in large markets such as Los Angeles and Boston, Philadelphia and San Diego.
