Sacramento takes on a new high-tech look
Article Abstract:
The migration of computer companies to Sacramento, CA has increased drastically during 1996. Companies move to Sacramento due to the relatively low cost of property, the proximity to frequently traveled interstate highways, and the vast amount of available real estate. Some of the companies that have moved into Sacramento include Apple, HP, Intel, Packard Bell Electronics, and NEC. Contributing to the success of the smaller, less-known computer start-up companies in Sacramento is the city's short distance from Silicon Valley, as well as its own growing potential customer base. Despite the high-tech growth in Sacramento, however, those naming the city "Silicon Valley East" must keep in mind that as of Oct 1996, government jobs still outnumber computer positions 7 to 1. While Sacramento's economy is benefiting from the emerging computer industry, it remains committed to environmental issues, and is focused on managing its growth in order to avoid the problems with air quality and traffic plaguing overbuilt cities.

A push to probe buying habits in Latino homes
Article Abstract:
ACNielsen has equipped 500 Latino households in Los Angeles with its Homescan device to track purchases. Big U.S. consumer goods companies, such as Procter and Gamble, are sponsoring this research because Latinos now comprise 12% of U.S. comsumers and tend to have larger households. This is the first attempt on this scale to survey U.S. households where Spanish is the primary language.
