Analysis of optimal file migration policies in distributed computer systems

Article Abstract:

Data processing performance in distributed computers systems may be enhanced with the use of file migration. This, however, would require the creation of workable control policies that would enable the systems to maximize the benefits of file migration operations. To gain insights on how optimal file migration policies may best be structured, research was undertaken to examine their analytic properties and performance according to a Markov decision model of such policies. Results of numerical experiments and simulations indicated that file migration can result in considerable cost improvement under certain conditions. Small-size real-world computer systems may benefit well from the implementation of the optimal file migration model.

Optimal update policies for distributed materialized views

Article Abstract:

Materialized database views are widely utilized in many settings because they can cut transaction processing costs, increase information availability, and eliminate the need to store consistent replicated data. Updating these materialized views, however, can be difficult. Database administrators and users may deal with this problem with the aid of either a base relation or another materialized view. Mathematical models that can help in the formulation of operational guidelines are presented.
