School graduation prayer struck down

The Supreme Court ruled that nonsectarian prayers during a public school graduation ceremony violated First Amendment guarantees of separation of church and state. The 5-4 decision involved a ceremony at Nathan Bishop Middle School in Providence, RI.

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 that the University of Virginia must award the same funding to a Christian magazine and it does to other student-run organizations. The majority opinion held that selective support of private speech should not be allowed.

Church group gets equal access to school

The Supreme Court held that church group Lamb's Chapel should be given access to school facilities in Long Island, NY. The Court also upheld a ruling permitting Texas high school students to lead prayers during graduation.
