Senate backs tougher lobbyist rules

The Senate reacted to public disapproval of the increasing power of lobbyists and special-interest groups by passing a bill to require lobbyists to provide reports of their activities to the public. Lobbyists receiving over $10,000 annually from all clients are affected by the bill.

Senate rejects flag-desecration measure
Article Abstract:
The Senate rejected legislation that would have made flag desecration a crime. The Supreme Court ruled in 1989 and 1990 that such laws imposed by states and then Congress violated First Amendment rights. Pres Clinton said he would veto any flag desecration legislation.
