Smith, Smale to share top GM posts

The board of directors of General Motors has selected John F. Smith as CEO and John G. Smale as chairman, replacing Robert C. Stempel who resigned Oct 26, 1992. The Board's decision to divide the two positions was designed to prevent too much power from being placed in the hands of one person.

Stempel resigns as GM chairman

Chmn Stempel resigned on Oct 26, 1992, from the position he had held since Aug 1990. Stempel stated that he could no longer tolerate the rumors surrounding a possible forced resignation and that the rumors had undermined GM's operations.

GM directors shake up management

Outside directors have made changes in GM's management. The directors demoted Pres Lloyd Reuss to executive vice president and replaced him with John F. Smith, Jr. The directors also reduced the responsibilities of Chmn Robert Stempel.
