So many megabytes, so little space; goal is a gizmo that would store all digital data
Article Abstract:
Major companies like IBM, Sony, SanDisk and Lexar Media Corp. are trying to develop new digital computer storage devices that can provide the high quality and low cost available from videotape, film, floppy disks and compact disks. Digital devices currently on the market are quite expensive, incompatible with various digital outputs, and don't yet have the quality of products based on older technology. Many digital storage devices are based on 'flash memory.' Sony offers the Memory Stick, while cameras mostly use Compact Flash. IBM offers 'Microdrive,' with a capacity of 340 megabytes. Regular computer hard drives cost 2 and a half cents per megabyte. Industry analysts say that the new digital storage products must come down to 10 cents a megabyte before they'll be able to compete with conventional hard drives. Portable media may not win out, experts say. Innovations in wireless and broadband communications technology may result in the ability to exchange information between devices without the need for a removable stick or card. Nor is a universal standard inevitable. Consumers are now used to using various media, such as Zip drives, floppy disks, tapes, and compact disks in computers.
