South Africa adopts new democratic constitution; De Klerk's party quits ruling coalition

South Africa adopted a new constitution that provides greater civil rights provisions on May 8, 1996. The vote was almost unanimous, but members of the Inkatha Freedom Party boycotted the proceedings. DeKlerk's decision to form an opposition party stems from dissatisfaction with parts of the document.

De Klerk feted in Nigeria

F.W. de Klerk made the first visit by a South African president to Nigeria in April 1992. The invitation for the visit was extended after the successful South African vote on sharing power with the black majority.
