Stepping out of the AT&T nest; NCR spreads its wings (flight insurance, anyone?)
Article Abstract:
NCR Corp is on target with its plans to return to profitability before its separation from parent AT&T Corp in late 1996. NCR has lost almost $4 billion since its acquisition by AT&T in 1991, but has reached the break-even point in its 3rd qtr 1996. Company Chmn Lars A. Nyberg did not expect to reach this point until the end of the year. Nyberg eliminated 8,000 jobs and reduced annual expenses by $600 million to achieve the financial turnaround. The 3rd qtr operating profit of $29 million compares with a $196 million loss for last year's same period. Company employees will benefit from the turnaround through stock options that were promised if NCR has a break-even year. The options could be worth up to $4,500 per employee. NCR faces stiff competition as it becomes an independent company. Its traditional strengths in the automatic teller machine, electronic cash register and large-scale computer markets have eroded during its control by AT&T.

The designer who made the Mac smile: Susan Kare's electronic icons are computer history writ small
Article Abstract:
Susan Kare designed the Macintosh's paintbrush, moving watch, trash can and other icons, as well as several of the icons in Microsoft Windows 3.0. Kare's designs helped give the Macintosh the personality that engendered its cult following. The graphical nature of the Web has increased demand for Kare's creations. Kare recently worked on the new release of IBM's OS/2 operating system as part of the company's attempt to make OS/2 more fun to use. Among her other designs are the Macintosh's original fonts, which were named after cities, and several of the playing cards in the Windows solitaire game. Kare often takes out more than she puts in when asked to revamp a program, and she tends to stick with a few primary colors for her icons.

Intel files a counterclaim against Digital Equipment
Article Abstract:
Intel has filed a counterclaim against DEC is response to DEC's lawsuit charging that Intel was in violating of 10 of its patents. Intel's anticipated countersuit accuses DEC of violating 14 of Intel's patents. When questioned by a DEC spokesperson Intel admitted the reason it was not filing a separate lawsuit is because the company does not have a case that is strong enough to stand on its own. Industry analysts believe company executive should put a stop to all of the lawsuits before the lawyers allow things to get out of hand. DEC and Intel officials have met for a round of furtive talks, which resulted in nothing. Intel's voracious response has lead many in the industry to believe there may be a basis for DEC's accusations.
