Strategic management of uncertainty
Article Abstract:
Frequently, managers operating within for-profit organizations make decisions that contribute to environmental uncertainty, which affects the organization's equilibrium and performance. A model of managerial decision-making and uncertainty is developed and compared to previously designed models dealing with these phenomena. It is noted that occasionally managers may wish to promote uncertainty, especially in the minds of their competitors. However, most often the actions of corporate managers are intended to minimize uncertainty. The model developed allows management strategies to be designated as: promoting uncertainty internally, promoting uncertainty externally, minimizing uncertainty internally and minimizing uncertainty externally. It is also shown that pursuit of market growth is accompanied by higher uncertainty (greater risk).
