Accounting for magic
Article Abstract:
Sally Industries, Inc (Jacksonville, FL) is a manufacturer of animatronic robots used for entertainment. Time management and production control are integral parts of the firm 's management control system, and both the cost estimation and time management and production control systems are based on PCs. The cost estimation system, which is used to estimate the cost of components of a animatronic robot, is based on a Lotus 1-2-3 template. The most important direct cost component is direct labor, and an average rate of labor is calculated for each production task and adjusted for time. Managing employees' time is the focus of the time management and production control system which tracks all employees hours for a project and maintains strict accountability. The general accounting package is PC-based software tailored for contractors, but incorporates an inventory of raw materials.

A system is born: management control at American Transtech
Article Abstract:
The establishment of the accounting systems and controllership function at American Transtech Inc. (a company formed when A T & T divested into seven regional companies) is described. The systems were in place nine months after the company was formed. The new chief financial officer was forced to plan the controllership functions under strict time constraints, so he designed the systems after considering strategic and tactical concerns, management's needs, intracompany transfer and cost allocation problems, and the basic requirements of reporting operating results and monitoring operational performance. The systems design, which is continually reviewed and revised, is considered to be appropriate to the firm's structure, flexible enough to meet changing requirements, easy to use and comprehend, and (perhaps most importantly) timely and accurate.

Article Abstract:

American Transtech's pricing of service transfers as a major part of its management control system is described. Issues discussed include: flexibility in transfer pricing, growing emphasis on variance analysis, project system additions, cost approximations, and full and incremental costs.
