Winter Olympics begin for TV marketers
Article Abstract:
Companies are just beginning to decide how much money to allocate to TV advertising during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, UT. NBC is trying to generate excitement for the winter games, but TV advertising spending is expected to be 10 to 15% less than it was for the 2000 games. Veteran Beers helps U.S. craft its message
Article Abstract:
Charlotte Beers, former chariwoman of J. Walter Thompson, has just become the Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy. Her job is, in essence, to sell the United States as a brand, domestically and internationally, a task made difficult by anti-Americanism overseas as well as anticorporatism at home and abroad. Ms. Beers intends to use the Internet as well as television to convey the U.S. viewpoint as widely and effectively as possible.

Strategies revisited in the face of growing fears about mail
Article Abstract:
Fears of bioterrorist attacks via mail, following recent anthrax scares, have marketers rethinking how to reach consumers who may now be loathe to open unsolicted letters and packages. Some say the Internet will play a role in reassuring people that direct-market offers are legitimate and safe. Others say that services such as those offered by FedEx may jump in popularity, since consumers have high confidence in reputable overnight-mail services.
