Sugar's rags lead to riches

Warren Truss, the Australian Minister for Agriculture, is serious about reforms in sugar industry. To this end he has decided to withhold the government's financial assistance to the industry unless the industry implements the suggested reforms. The progress on reforms achieved by the regional advisory groups (RAGS) will form the measure for release of further installments.

The Higher education support bill passed through the senate at midnight on December 4 2003, after intense lobbying for amendments by the Australian vice-chancellors committee (AVCC), individual universities and independent senators. The result was a compromise, and the government made important changes close to the deadline.
