Sun Microsystems earnings are stronger than expected
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems's 2nd qtr 1998 results exceeded estimates, helping the company to dodge the Asian economic crisis and Microsoft's continued competition. Quarterly income reached $149.4 million, or 46 cents a share, including $110.1 million in charges related to acquisitions. The income represents a 16% reduction from the 2nd qtr 1997's total of $178.3 million, or 46 cents a share. Sun's overall earnings for the 2nd qtr 1998 were $223.2 million, or 57 cents a share. The 24% improvement over the 2nd qtr 1997 surpassed securities analysts' estimates of 54 cents a share, according to research company First Call. Revenue for the 2nd qtr 1998 jumped to $2.45 billion, a 17.7% increase over the 2nd qtr 1997's $2.08 billion. Big companies still were selecting Sun workstations and servers for their most key tasks, preferring their Solaris version of the Unix OS over Microsoft's Windows NT, according to Sun executives.

Novell readies a response to Windows
Article Abstract:
Novell CEO Robert Frankenberg plans to release the company's strategy for continued dominance in the networking arena. Novell currently owns about 65% of the market for networked computers but faces a challenge from Microsoft's Windows NT operating system. The announcement signals that Novell will re-focus on its strengths rather than pursuing scattered mergers in an effort to compete with Microsoft on every front. Novell's mergers caused the company to release a faulty NetWare 4.0 network operating system, opening the door to Windows NT. Frankenberg stresses the superiority of NetWare 4.1, which lies in its Directory Services. The Directory Services allow users to access a corporate network, wherever they are and to use authorized files without needing additional passwords. No competitor can match the offering. Novell's 1995 revenues are up 10% to $538 million in the quarter ending Jul 31.

And now, a scramble in finance software
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc is planning to establish its presence on the Internet with a series of software and hardware product releases. The company's vision of the Internet is that the global network will become more than a communications network but will eventually become a giant computer with processing capabilities that can be distributed to users. Sun's product lines will be intended to allow corporate users to use the Internet as a massive inter-office network system. The new products will also enable users to place more than just text and still images on Web sites that offer multimedia technology. Sun is hoping to eventually become the dominant company for the technology that allows the Internet to become a large computer offering processing power to users much as Microsoft has become the industry standard for operating systems.
