Continental shift; phone competition is much less vigorous in Europe than in the U.S. There are lessons in that
Article Abstract:
Alternative carriers are deploying diverse technologies to outperform US rivals in the $160 billion, deregulated European telephone market. A popular tactic among cable operators consists of zapping phone signals over strengthened cable-TV lines. UK-based Cable & Wireless Communications, for example, has attracted 1.6 million residential and business phone subscribers as well as approximately 800,000 cable-TV customers. Cable companies eventually will face problems in vying for the 'last mile,' given expensive upgrades and the emergence of telephone companies. Other companies such as Scotland-based Atlantic Telecom Group are delivering signals via rooftop antennas. Wireless technology has not gained popularity in many parts of Europe, because carriers lack the infrastructure to rely on a dominant carrier's network. Companies also are testing the transmission of phone and Internet signals to residences and businesses over electricity cables.

Do I have privacy on-line?
Article Abstract:
Users of the Internet, from Web site browsers to users of e-mail and online electronic commerce services, should be aware of attendant risks and privacy issues. One problem is that such information as addresses and social security numbers are now much easier to obtain. Of greater concern is the fact that each visit to a Web site, in the absence of security procedures or software, leaves a trail of information that can be accessed by marketing concerns eager to develop expensive marketing profiles. Even the ubiquitous e-mail used at the office can be tracked by managers and system administrators, as can Web site visits made on company time. Even more serious dangers are associated with electronic commerce via the Internet. Users of this growing commercial venue need to be aware of the fact that hackers or thieves can gain access to credit card information by such means as establishing fraudulent commercial Web sites.
