Article Abstract:
The ongoing US economic expansion which started in Apr. 1991 is one of the longest periods of economic expansion since the end of World War II. The period has seen 15 quarters of GDP growth, but total GDP has risen by a mere 12%. Inflation has been low, but lackluster consumer spending due to slow employment growth has kept the economy growing at a slow pace. Business fixed investment is growing well, but this has negative effects in the form of equipment imports and the use of machines to reduce the need for labor. Interest rate hikes are expected to have long-term effects on business spending.
