Supreme Court backs challenge to minority districts
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court voted five to four that election districts that are drawn to maximize minority representation can be challenged in the courts. The case, Shaw versus Reno, was brought by five white North Carolinians who objected to the way the twelfth district was partitioned.

The Supreme Court held that judges should use the 1975 Federal Rules of Evidence rather than a 1923 standard when determining admissibility of evidence. The Court's decision was unanimous.
