Surfing around the house
Article Abstract:
Cyrix's Webpad, a wireless computer due in summer 1999, lets home users handle Internet tasks without having to establish connections. A prototype of the three-pound, battery-operated Internet appliance was introduced at the Comdex computer trade show in Las Vegas in Nov 1998. Webpad will attach a receiver to a regular PC, which will enable users to perform online activities such as browsing the World Wide Web and managing E-mail at their leisure. Its 10.4-inch active matrix screen will display information fully, yet it is small enough for use throughout the house. Radio waves of 2.4GHz will provide a perimeter of 300 to 500 feet from the main computer, regardless of a dwelling's walls or floors. Periodic battery recharging will take place in a recharging base that probably will offer USB-enabled keyboards and mice. Cyrix projects the initial Webpads to cost approximately $500.

The Compaq Aero 2100, one of several competitors to the Palm Pilot, retails for $449. It offers a 256-color active matrix display, which is crisper and brighter than the Palm's. It can also record and play digital audio files, including memos, music, and recorded books and news. Based on the Windows CE operating system, the device has expansion slots for cards to add memory (up to 24MB), more storage space (up to 100MB) or a modem. The unit runs on lithium-ion batteries that last about 10 hours between charges.
