Goodrich, adding to aerospace muscle, to buy Coltec for $1.49 billion in stock

B.F. Goodrich Co., out of the tire business since the 1980's, will expand its aerospace business from components to integrated aircraft systems by acquiring Coltec Industries Inc. for $1.49 billion in stock plus debt. After the completion of the purchase, the company will move its corporate headquarters to Coltec's homebase, Charlotte, N.C., from its current Richfield, Ohio, location. Both companies view the combination as a good fit, with some complementary products.

Monsanto reports 34% jump in 2nd-period net

Monsanto Co.'s net income of $344 million was up 34% from comparable 1998 second quarter earnings of $257 million. 1999 sales were $2.59 bil; 1998, $2.1 bil. Searle's Celebrex arthritis drug continues to bring in revenue. The drug company's sales climbed from $607 mil in '98 to $937 mil in '99, an increase of 54%. Monsanto's agricultural-products business brought in $1.61 bil, up from $1.44 bil in '98.
