Sweeney defeated incumbent AFL-CIO Pres Thomas Donahue by a vote of 7.3 million to 5.7 million on Oct 25, 1995. Analysts predict Sweeney will be a more aggressive and activist leader than his predecessors. The union's executive council was expanded from 33 to 51 members.
