Tandy unveils 1000 RL in latest bid to stimulate home-computer market
Article Abstract:
Tandy Corp introduces its Tandy 1000 RL microcomputer for home use. It is aimed at novice home users and includes a user-friendly interface and built-in software for checkbook balancing, creating card lists, taking inventory and menu planning. The model with one floppy disk drive and a black-and-white monitor is priced at $749.90 while one with a hard disk drive and color screen lists for $1,299.90. Industry analysts are skeptical about the potential market for the Tandy 1000 RL because of its price and because products focused directly on the home market have not been successful. The same doubts are expressed about IBM's PS/1, which has color and microprocessor technology are slightly more sophisticated than are the Tandy's. Tandy's one advantage is its extensive retail store channel, which it plans to utilize fully by training its sales staff in the use of the new computer.

Compaq to unveil file servers aimed at small networks
Article Abstract:
Compaq introduces a new line of file servers and cuts the prices on others. The Compaq SystemPro/LT is a line of single-microprocessor file servers for smaller networks that support 30 or fewer nodes. The SystemPro/LT machines are priced as low as $5,999, with a top price of $10,999, and are designed as floor models in 'closets' rather than taking up desk space. This design provides more room for expansion than does a desktop model. Compaq is attempting to hold its market share in the area of file servers and compete in the less-costly niche. As part of this, the prices of the main SystemPro line of computers are being reduced by $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the model. Despite these moves, Compaq can expect additional competition because IBM is expected to introduce, in mid-Oct 1991, a new line of file servers for the same small- to medium-sized networks.
