AOL and Gateway introduce a contender in Net-appliance race
Article Abstract:
The Gateway Connected Touch Pad runs Instant AOL software to connect users to AOL services and the Web. The device sells for $599, AOL Internet service is $21.95 per month. Current users of the AOL service will already be familiar with the look and feel of this system. However, unlike Microsoft's competing system, the software doesn't open Word or Excel email attachments. Printing sofware will be out in January. Currently, MP3 file playback isn't included. Overall, the Touch Pad has much to recommend it.

Technology grows up; decade yields dramatic progress in cheaper, better products; some are still too complex
Article Abstract:
A look back at innovations and progress in personal communications technology during the 1991-2001 decade finds Microsoft prospering and Dell Computer outselling rivals. However, America Online and Palm are the true stars of the decade insofar as they opened the world of digital technology to the average consumer. The next decade will bring new digital devices, both wired and wireless, but the technology is still hobbled by the failure of phone and cable companies to swiftly ensure ubiquitous high-speed wired and wireless networks. Electronic commerce will not reach its full potential unless consumer concerns over security, privacy and copyright protection are fully addressed. Lastly, companies will have to make personal technology easier to use, or risk alienating consumers.
