Technology transfer utilizing vendor partnering and a self-managed project team: lessons learned
Article Abstract:
An ALCOA project to replace a troublesome potline computer system with a new state-of-the-art technology system was organized on a different basis from previous projects. The company's Massena, NY, operation made use of a team approach; partnering with the vendor, Digital Equipment; and embraced technology transfer. A self-managed project team was built up over the course of around six months, with two team members joining from Digital Equipment. A high level of candor among team members was reached and considerable proprietary technical information shared. Article also addresses negative aspects of the project approach and lessons learned from the experience.

Technology transfer to the private sector: a field study of manufacturer buying behavior
Article Abstract:
Most technology transfer from the public to the private sector is conducted through various attempts at forming consortia and networks. Not all these programs work, however, because of the differences in goals and perspectives between the private and public sectors. The public and private sectors can improve technology transfer by using a marketing perspective. This will increase public sector participation in product development and provide the private sector with a broader base of technical knowledge and research which can be used for product development.
