Article Abstract:
The Bell telephone companies have been allowed to reenter the long-distance telephone market under the Telecom Act of 1996, but the FCC has not approved any for reentry as of 1997. Industry consolidation has also continued at the national and local levels in 1997, and the Internet has continued to grow as a major communications medium and will have an additional economic impact. WorldCom Inc and AirTouch Communications are among good industry stocks.

Competition is becoming more important for the telecommunications industry with legislation signed on Feb 8, 1996. Mergers and strategic alliances will be promoted, but there are several clouded areas for local phone companies and long-distance providers. Bell networks can be bypassed by competitive access providers along with the Internet, and wireless penetration is also increasing. Investors must seek individual stocks for financial commitment.
