CAM-I reports on cost management efforts
Article Abstract:
The Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing-International held its third-quarter meeting in Sep 1998 in Baltimore, MD. The event, which focused on cost management systems and technical programs, featured presentations of work group efforts and related activities of sponsor organizations. Frank Reynolds of Eastman Kodak and Ernest B. Smith of General Motors discussed guidelines for developing a capital investment model for assessing investments in flexible manufacturing. Meanwhile, Alan Vercio of IBM stressed that conventional capital budgeting approaches are not sufficient sources of information for investments in flexible manufacturing. Michael Kramer of Boeing narrated the eight-step program used by his company's Rocketdyne division in encouraging everyone's participation in the management and reduction of overhead rates. Those who attended the affair were given a paper on service process measurement and a CD-ROM.

Marines embrace continuous improvement: highlight of CAM-I's meeting

The Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing-International (CAM-I) held its 4th qtr. meeting in Florida in Dec. 1996. The main topic during the event was how to support effective organizational change through several techniques and approaches. Col. D.J. Lavoy discussed the continuous improvement program at the US Marine Corps, which is aimed at replacing a crisis-based management approach to a process-oriented organization. Bell Canada's Jim Diodati, on the other hand, talked about the development of a value-based management approach in his company in response to competitive pressure and the need to link strategy to long-term cash flow measures and operational linkages. Finally, Richard Miske spoke about relating activity-based management to shareholder value.

Knowledge management was the focus of the third-quarter meeting of the Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing-International in Sep 1997. Consultant Barbara Simonetti headed an interactive discussion about the learning process, particularly the reason for learning, definition of learning and application of learning. She also discussed guidelines for organizing learning opportunities. The representative of two companies discussed how knowledge management affected their learning initiatives. Cindy Johnson of Texas Instrument talked about her company's Business Excellence Standard while Michael Novak of Chrysler Corp talked about activity-based costing and management. Finally, author and professor Lin Fitzgerald discussed nonfinancial performance measurements.
