The IT skills crisis is now
Article Abstract:
Australia is experiencing a shortage of skilled workers in the information technology (IT) industry, and this shortage may lead to higher salaries/ benefits and bidding wars for skilled workers. An Australian Computer Society survey found that the average salary for all technology job functions is $68,000. Shortages of skilled IT workers amount to about 30,000. Australia produces only 9,000 IT college graduates a year. In 1998, several IT organizations formed the IT&T Skills Taskforce to tackle the shortage issue.

Watch out for the cyber squatters that prey on company names
Article Abstract:
The practice of cyber squatting--or the registration by speculators of an Internet domain name of an existing company for the purpose of selling it back to the company--is widespread in Australia. Many organizations in Australia have paid between $50,000 and $220,000 to buy back their names from a squatter who originally paid $125 for the name. Domain registry Internet Names Australia has no solution to cyber squatting, but it is checking each submitted name against a database of trademarks.

Performers question net copyright
Article Abstract:
Australia is considering legislation that attempts to define copyright issues with regards to digital media. The legislation would specify that the practice of using Web caching does not infringe upon the rights of copyright owners. The Australian Performing Rights Association opposes the legislation because it is concerned that caching could eventually affect artists' earnings.
