The Management of Cross-Disciplinary Research
Article Abstract:
Two sets of issues are examined, the need to make terminology more precise and the effect of an institutional setting on cross-disciplinary activity. The differences between multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research are examined. Crossdisciplinary research in groups of different sizes and kinds is treated. A table shows issues arising from doing interdisciplinary research in different organizational contexts. The implications for management are analyzed. The basis of this material is the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Manchester, England, in 1981.
