The bridge solution; CD-ROMs help give the illusion that the PC has no limits when it comes to interactivity
Article Abstract:
Hybrid CD-ROMs, software with active links to Internet sites, are most often used with online games such as Quake. The hybrids, which combine the strengths of the Internet and the PC, are an excellent stopgap technology until high-speed data access becomes widespread. The software format provides some interactivity with a robust, graphics-intensive data and applications offering. Intuit's Quicken financial management software now offers integration with the companies' Web site. Creative Wonder and Electronic Arts are creating a CD-ROM of archival video from ABC News, with links to an AOL ABC News site. Intel has offered financial incentives for the creation of hybrid CD-ROMs to support PC sales and create demand for its MMX technology. DVD, which will hold at least eight times as much as conventional CD-ROMs, should be widely available by Christmas 1997.

Purple Moon folds amid tough rivalry with Barbie games; start-up's computer titles targeted girls with focus on issues of growing up
Article Abstract:
It came as a surprise when it was learned that Purple Moon LLC stopped doing business and laid off all 40 of its employees. Purple Moon made non-violent video games designed to appeal to girls aged 8 to 12. Since no one from the company could be reached for comment, people are surmising that the firm's lack of a brand name and the strength that brings was the reason for the closure, that it couldn't compete with the successful Barbie video games sold by Mattel.

Purple Moon tried, failed to topple the (doll) house that Barbie built
Article Abstract:
An unnamed source said that Purple Moon has lost over $30 million trying to compete in the games for girls industry against Mattel with its popular Barbie line that had 64.5% of the market compared to Learning Co.'s 21.6% and Purple Moon's 5.7%. Another contributing factor for Purple Moon's closing its doors may have been the 30% loss of retail shelf space for CD-ROM games. The company needed another financial partner along with Paul Allen, but time ran out.
