The effects of R&D team co-location on communication patterns among R&D, marketing, and manufacturing
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the effects of research and development (R&D) team co-location on the dissemination of information among R&D teams, and between R&D groups and marketing function. Limitations linked with the association between proximity and face-to-face interaction were also examined. It was also assumed that R&D professionals are more likely to communicate with other R&D researchers than with marketing or operations persons. Communication frequency was then determined using a five-point scale. Results indicated that the effect of co-location correlates with the content and medium of communication flows. The co-location of teams in a separate facility and a higher level of cohesiveness among researchers did not expand the gap between R&D and marketing.

Price indexes for R and D inputs, 1969-1983
Article Abstract:
Research and development (R&D) price indexes are presented, based mostly on actual expenditures and prices reported by companies. A carefully designed sample of 100 firms is studied, revealing that the gross national product deflator used in official government R&D statistics tends to underestimate inflation's effects in R&D. These indices can be helpful on a widespread basis in R&D budgeting and productivity studies.
