The effects of population aging on the physician services market: a computable equilibrium analysis
Article Abstract:
A computable equilibrium model (CEM) is used to analyze theeffect of an aging population on the market for physician services. CEMs depictthe behavior of a system made up of a specific number of agents whose actions affect the actions of the others. Each agent has control over certain variablesand seeks to optimize its objective, with equilibrium occuring when all agents'objectives are optimized. Simulations using CEM confirm the hypothesis that aging will increase expenditures on healthcare services because the elderly will be using these more intensively. However, the effects on prices and expenditures of an aging population is shown to be dependent on the type of service and consumer. For example, prices and expenditures on eldercare increase as the population ages, while prices and expenditures on other types of services decrease.

Pricing your services
Article Abstract:
Techniques on how to add the price of special services to products are presented. The first important step is to determine the economic value to the customer (EVC) of special services. This requires evaluating the usefulness of the special services, the types of costs involved and the customers' alternatives. The logic of EVC is applied to product lines, but rarely on special services. This is a mistake, because it weakens a business' financial position while diminishing customers' confidence in the business' products.
