The economic slowdown is driving some of the smaller franchise chains in Australia to wall because of slower sales, increasing costs and disputes. The adverse implications of Australian federal court's judgment in Lenard's case for franchisees are discussed in this context. The lack of clarity on franchisee's position in the event of franchisor's bankruptcy is another aspect that is discussed.
